Study: Radicalized Muslims Have Little Actual Knowledge Of Islam

Extremists and Islamophobes alike have attempted to paint violent factions within Islam as the true expression of the faith. But a new study gives credence to what countless Muslim leaders, activists and scholars have argued: that groups like the self-proclaimed Islamic State are Muslim in name alone. A group of German scholars at the Universities of Bielefeld and Osnabrück analyzed 5,757 WhatsApp messages found on a phone seized by police following a terrorist attack in the spring of 2016. The messages were exchanged among 12 young men involved in the attack. The attack itself was not identified in the report. Deutsche Welle noted that the timeframe suggested it may...

Boxing Champ Launches Sports Hijab

A boxing champion from the East End has created a sports hijab to help more Muslim women get into combat sports. Ruqsana Begum (below) – who is the current British female Atomweight Muay Thai boxing champion – runs personal training sessions and women-only sessions in the sport at the Osmani Centre in Whitechapel. She said: “I came up with the idea during the Olympics. I was interested in the story of an American athlete who was told she couldn’t compete wearing her hijab due to health and safety reasons, so her father created one that was approved for her to fight in. “I thought if they can create one...

Is Islamic Law an Answer for Humanitarians?...

Is Islamic Law an Answer for Humanitarians?

DUBAI, 24 April 2014 (IRIN) – Humanitarian action today is largely taking place in Muslim-majority countries where some combatants turn to Islamic law, among other sources, to guide their military behaviour. As a result, in the last decade, aid and advocacy agencies have increasingly tried to understand Islamic law in order to use its humanitarian provisions as tools of negotiation with armed groups in the Muslim world. This is particularly helpful in engaging Islamist armed groups, some of whom reject international humanitarian law (IHL). Some aid agencies try to situate their arguments for access or protection of civilians within a religious context, sometimes using scholars, mullahs or other religious...

Muslim Holy Month of Ramadan Begins

Muslims around the world are observing the holy month of Ramadan, while sweltering heat in the Middle East is putting an extra strain on those who are fasting. Ramadan started earlier than usual this year, although there is some disagreement between the two main sects of Islam on the exact starting date. Sunni Muslims began fasting at dawn Wednesday, while Shi’ites are expected to start Thursday.  The discrepancy is due to differing interpretations of the lunar calendar. High heat across much of the Arab world has raised concerns for families, particularly in places like Baghdad and the Gaza Strip, where electricity is routinely cut off for hours at a time. To mark the month of Ramadan, U.S. President Barack...

How America Looks Through Muslim Eyes

August 03, 2010 Mohamed Elshinnawi | Washington, DC An estimated seven million Muslims live in the United States today. But for many Americans, Islam is associated with extremists like Osama bin Laden. To shed light on this religious group and counter mutual distrust, American University Professor Akbar Ahmed and his team of young researchers traveled to more than 75 American cities. Those journeys are chronicled in a documentary, and an accompanying book, called “Journey into America.” Negative perceptions “We don’t like the Muslims, that is all,” says one American woman in the documentary. “They don’t believe in our Jesus.” “Their book tells them to kill,” says another man. Statements like that prompted Ahmed and his team to craft a documentary around two themes:...

Islamic Schools in US Raise Hopes, Fears

July 12, 2010 Mohamed Elshinnawi | Dearborn, Michigan. As the population of Muslims in the United States continues to grow, so too does the number of Islamic schools serving Muslim families across the nation. American Muslims see these schools as a way to provide their children with a combination of good, mainstream education and training in the essentials of their faith. But critics fear some of these schools might expose Muslim children to radical Islamist views. Religious education Education has always been very important to the Muslim community in the United States. And like many other families, Muslim parents have educational options. They can send their children to secular, county-administered public schools or private academies while providing religious...

New British Ads Promote Muslim Professionals in UK

June 7, 2010 British commuters on Monday are seeing advertisements posted in trains, bus stops and taxis promoting a positive image of Muslims. The new “inspired by Muhammad” ad campaign in London is sponsored bythe Exploring Islam Foundation. It is being launched one month after an online survey of more than 2,000 adults in the United Kingdom found that more than 58 percent of them associate Islam with extremism. The poll also found that nearly 70 percent of those surveyed thought Islam encourages the repression of women. The foundation’s director, Remona Aly, says many Muslims are very concerned about the way their faith is perceived by the British public. Aly says organizers hope the campaign will highlight ways...

From Corporate Executive to Halal Goat Farmer

June 23, 2010 Mohamed Elshinnawi | Washington, DC A former telecommunications executive has created a new life for himself in rural America outside of Washington, D.C.. Mukit Hossain moved to a six-hectare farm in Spotsylvania, Virginia to raise goats. What prompted Hossain to become a goat farmer? Two young daughters and what he saw as an over emphasis on material life. “It was mostly about designer clothes. It was about conspicuous consumption. It was about boyfriends and girlfriends,” he says. “And for five and six year olds to think in those terms, I thought it is quite dangerous, so we decided that we are going to move further south to a farm.” So Hossain reordered his life and...

April 28, 2010 Meredith Buel | Washington U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has announced a series of initiatives designed to boost America’s relations with entrepreneurs in countries with large Muslim populations.  Clinton’s remarks came at the end of a two-day summit on entrepreneurship.
