Study: Radicalized Muslims Have Little Actual Knowledge Of Islam...

Extremists and Islamophobes alike have attempted to paint violent factions within Islam as the true expression of the faith. But a new study gives credence to what countless Muslim leaders, activists and scholars have argued: that groups like the self-proclaimed Islamic State are Muslim in name alone. A group of German scholars at the Universities of Bielefeld and Osnabrück analyzed 5,757 WhatsApp messages found on a phone seized by police following a terrorist attack in the spring of 2016. The messages were exchanged among 12 young men involved in the attack. The attack itself was not identified in the report. Deutsche Welle noted that the timeframe suggested it may...

Boxing Champ Launches Sports Hijab...

A boxing champion from the East End has created a sports hijab to help more Muslim women get into combat sports. Ruqsana Begum (below) – who is the current British female Atomweight Muay Thai boxing champion – runs personal training sessions and women-only sessions in the sport at the Osmani Centre in Whitechapel. She said: “I came up with the idea during the Olympics. I was interested in the story of an American athlete who was told she couldn’t compete wearing her hijab due to health and safety reasons, so her father created one that was approved for her to fight in. “I thought if they can create one...

Is Islamic Law an Answer for Humanitarians?...

DUBAI, 24 April 2014 (IRIN) – Humanitarian action today is largely taking place in Muslim-majority countries where some combatants turn to Islamic law, among other sources, to guide their military behaviour. As a result, in the last decade, aid and advocacy agencies have increasingly tried to understand Islamic law in order to use its humanitarian provisions as tools of negotiation with armed groups in the Muslim world. This is particularly helpful in engaging Islamist armed groups, some of whom reject international humanitarian law (IHL). Some aid agencies try to situate their arguments for access or protection of civilians within a religious context, sometimes using scholars, mullahs or other religious...
Stockholm Bomber Seen as Radical by U.K. Muslims
STOCKHOLM (AP) — At his local mosque in England, Taimour Abdulwahab alarmed elders with his extreme views on Islam. On the Internet, he posted videos of Chechen fighters and abused Iraqi prisoners. On Saturday, officials say, he died in a botched suicide bombing in Stockholm. Authorities are now trying to learn when he was radicalized, whether he had accomplices — and how a man whose radical views were displayed both online and in person escaped official notice. Swedish prosecutor Tomas Lindstrand said Monday that authorities are certain the suicide bomber who terrified pre-Christmas shoppers was Abdulwahab, an Iraqi-born Swede who spent much of the past decade in Britain. He said Abdulwahab was completely unknown to Swedish security police...

Jamia Islamic University Gives Honorary Degree to Dalai Lama
NEW DELHI: For Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, receiving a honorary doctorate degree from Jamia Millia Islamia, “a university with a Muslim flavour”, was special. “This degree from a university with Muslim flavour is special as I am committed to religious harmony. Since September 11, I have been defending Islam. For a few misguided people we should not blame a religion. Islam is one of the important religions in the planet, and hope for millions of people,” said the Dalai Lama on Tuesday. The Degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) was conferred on the 14th Dalai Lama by vice-chancellor Najeeb Jung at Jamia`s annual convocation. Union HRD, science and technology and communication and IT minister Kapil Sibal...

Muslims on hajj in Saudi Arabia ascend holy mount
Posted 11/15/2010 10:57 PM By Sarah El Deeb, Associated Press MOUNT ARAFAT, Saudi Arabia — Nearly 3 million Muslims performing the annual hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia climbed the rocky desert Mount Arafat on Monday, chanting that they have come to answer God’s call. The white-robed pilgrims began their ascent at dawn, covering the Mountain of Mercy at Arafat in an endless sea of white as their chants of “Labyek Allah” — or “Here I am, God, answering your calling” — reverberated. The climb is one of the cornerstones of the pilgrimage, which is required from every able-bodied Muslim at least once in his life. It is the site where Islam’s Prophet Muhammad delivered his farewell sermon, and Muslims believe on this day the doors...

Muslim Sacrifice Helps Needy Families
Published On Mon Nov 15 2010 Alex Horkay, Staff Reporter As Muslims begin to celebrate Eid al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, a Toronto group believes it’s the perfect time to reach out to the community by providing fresh halal meat for those less fortunate. The Qurbani Project, an initiative of the Toronto chapter of the Muslim Association of Canada, aims to distribute 1,360 kg of meat to as many as 300 GTA families — many of whom may not eat meat at all because they cannot afford it. “What a lot of Canadians fail to realize is that locally in our own city there are many people who are not fortunate enough to have meat on their...

Muslim Americans Urge Community Members to Vote in Upcoming Election
October 29, 2010 Kane Farabaugh | Chicago, Illinois Representatives Keith Ellison from Minnesota and Andre Carson from Indiana are currently the only Muslim American members of Congress. But they represent a growing segment of the U.S. population that is often in the spotlight as a result of racial profiling and religious intolerance. In an effort to seek better representation in Washington, many Muslim American communities across the country are organizing voting drives to ensure those that can vote, have their voices heard in the upcoming midtern elections. It is a cool and unusually windy evening in the suburban Chicago community of Bridgeview. Not far from the local mosque, which towers over the homes in this predominately Muslim-American neighborhood,...

Local US Farmers Cater to Muslim Traditions
September 30, 2010 Jeff Swicord | Mount Airy, Maryland Many Muslim-Americans have often had difficulty finding Halal-certified meat, or meat slaughtered in according to Islamic tradition, in their local grocery stores. Sometimes, they have resorted to buying whole goats or lambs on farms and slaughtering them on-site themselves, in accordance with tradition. But this is illegal in many parts of the United States. Realizing the growing Muslim market in the U.S., some American farmers are opening legal halal-certified slaughterhouses with great success. After 37 years of working with livestock on other people’s farms, Joe Kavanagh decided to open a slaughterhouse on his own farm with a unique clientele in mind. Part of his business is catering to Muslims,...

Get to know a Muslim, rather than hate one
Updated 9/26/2010 6:17 PM By Tom Krattenmaker And then you’d know that the situation was bound to play out on a whole different frequency. At flashpoints from Temecula, Calif., to Gainesville, Fla., to New York, N.Y., and all along the low road in between, mongers of fear and haters of the “other” are sounding the alarm about Islam with a new level of intensity. To hear it from conservative spokesman Newt Gingrich and those of a similar persuasion, the Muslims between our shores are bent on taking over the country and imposing their “un-American” values. This demonizing and demagoguery is beneath us. My plea to those tempted to fall for the beware-of-all-Muslims hype: Get to know someone before you decide to fear...

US Muslim Leaders Call for Week of Dialogue With Other Faiths
September 20, 2010 Carolyn Weaver | New York U.S. Muslim groups are calling for a nationwide week of “dialogue” in response to the controversy over the proposed Islamic cultural center near the former World Trade Center site, known as Ground Zero. Speaking outside the proposed Islamic Center building site near Ground Zero, Muslim leaders said freedom of religion is for everyone in America. They called for a “National Week of Dialogue” to combat ignorance and bigotry that they said motivates opposition to mosques and Muslim schools in several other places in the United States. Nihad Awad, of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said it is unfair to associate the proposed Islamic Center near Ground Zero with the...
