Halal Cosmetics Founder Hopes to Broaden Appeal...

August 26, 2010 David Byrd | Washington A mother of five from Birmingham, England has launched her own line of halal cosmetics.  Samina Akhter started her cosmetic and personal care line because she was disturbed by some of the ingredients in over-the-counter products.  Akhter is hoping her line will appeal to non-Muslims as well as serve the needs of her own community. When you open the website,saminapuremakeup.com, a flash movie featuring several beautiful models greets you.  All the women have flawless, smooth skin, moist lips, and alluring eyes.  Midway through the movie a model appears in a head scarf, but that is one of the few clues that the product line appeals to Muslim women. One of the images...

How America Looks Through Muslim Eyes

August 03, 2010 Mohamed Elshinnawi | Washington, DC An estimated seven million Muslims live in the United States today. But for many Americans, Islam is associated with extremists like Osama bin Laden. To shed light on this religious group and counter mutual distrust, American University Professor Akbar Ahmed and his team of young researchers traveled to more than 75 American cities. Those journeys are chronicled in a documentary, and an accompanying book, called “Journey into America.” Negative perceptions “We don’t like the Muslims, that is all,” says one American woman in the documentary. “They don’t believe in our Jesus.” “Their book tells them to kill,” says another man. June 7, 2010 British commuters on Monday are seeing advertisements posted in trains, bus stops and taxis promoting a positive image of Muslims. The poll also found that nearly 70 percent of those surveyed thought Islam encourages the repression of women. The foundation’s director, Remona Aly, says many Muslims are very concerned about the way their faith is perceived by the British public. Aly says organizers hope the campaign will highlight ways...

April 28, 2010 Meredith Buel | Washington U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has announced a series of initiatives designed to boost America’s relations with entrepreneurs in countries with large Muslim populations.  Clinton’s remarks came at the end of a two-day summit on entrepreneurship. Secretary Clinton announced the new programs she says are designed to help entrepreneurs in mostly-Muslim countries and eventually expand worldwide. “I am pleased to announce the launch of the Global Entrepreneurship Programs’ first pilot program, in Egypt, coordinated by a team of entrepreneurs in residence from USAID.  We will soon launch our second program in Indonesia and we plan to expand to a dozen countries within the next two years,” she said. Young Muslims in US Seek Homegrown Imams...

April 16, 2010 Vidushi Sinha | Washington The Muslim population in the United States is growing, and so is its need for spiritual guidance. A new generation American Muslims is demanding more from local mosques than they can always provide. “It’s not what you see on television or it’s not what people are talking about or a dress code or whatever. It’s about being good to your fellow man, about being good to your God. That’s all it is. That’s what it is,” said Adeel Zeb, an aspiring imam and a Muslim chaplain at American University in Washington. He reaches out to young Muslims with what he calls the real message of Islam. Zeb says there is often...
