Muslims Share Same Sentiments with Catholics on Assisted Suicide...

TORONTO – There’s about one million Canadians who know suicide is wrong, assisted suicide turns doctors into murderers, the state has an obligation to protect life until natural death and that not everything in medicine depends on the freely chosen wishes of the patient. These people are not Catholic. They’re Muslim. Striking similarities between Catholic and Muslim bioethics were on show at a Canadian Catholic Bioethics Institute lecture by Dr. Shabbir Alibhai at Toronto’s University of St. Michael’s College March 5. Alibhai practises geriatric and family medicine within Toronto’s University Health Network, but he’s also a cancer researcher and published bioethicist. There are differences with Catholic bioethics, often in approach or emphasis, but on end-of-life issues Islamic scholars...

China’s Female Imams Carrying on Ancient Islamic Tradition...

China isn’t the heartland of Islam, but it is the only country in the world to have a long history of female imams. A small group of women in central China’s Henan province have been imams in their community for centuries. This part of China is home to less than four per cent of China’s roughly 23 million Muslims. The believers are from an ethnic minority known as the Hui. A group of Muslim grandmothers wander into a mosque behind an ancient city wall shortly before noon prayers on a Friday. A crowd of 50 soon fill the prayer room. Ge Caixia is their religious leader, a female imam in the mosque that’s dedicated only to women. She...

Iraqi Cleric: Suicide Operations Tarnish Islam...

A prominent Iraqi cleric on Thursday (March 20th) slammed those who promote suicide operations and claim they are “jihad” and self-sacrifice, saying they tarnish Islam and are not in any way connected to religion. A picture of a boy who “blew himself up in western Ramadi” in a group of people was posted to the Twitter account “Rashidun Caliphate”, which bears the black flag of al-Qaeda, on Sunday. “Al-Qaeda’s posting of a picture of a child younger than 12 years old who was wearing an explosives vest is a criminal, heinous act unacceptable according to any belief, monotheistic religion or any ideology,” said Anbar Iftaa Council member Sheikh Nasser Khalil al-Dulaimi. “Suicide operations carried out by al-Qaeda or...

Jewish Filmmaker to Head Philadelphia Chapter of CAIR...

A national Muslim civil-rights organization has named a Jewish filmmaker as executive director of its Philadelphia chapter. In introducing himself online, Jacob Bender writes “Asalaam Alaykum!” (“peace be upon you” in Arabic), quotes the Quran, and states he brings “a decades-long commitment to promoting peace and justice between Abraham’s Children (Abna’ Ibrahim) and a long resume of professional accomplishments.” In announcing the appointment, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) referred to Bender, its highest ranking non-Muslim, as “a bridge builder between the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim communities,” noting that, “in the wake of the attacks on September 11, 2001, Mr. Bender undertook a series of outreach initiatives to the Muslim community, both in the U.S. and abroad....

The Mercy Behind Halal Slaughter Methods...

Like many religions, Islam is often misunderstood not only by non-Muslims but even by many Muslims as well. This is partly to do with how Islamophobic media sources portray Islam, and partly to do with how Muslims misrepresent their own religion. On the other hand, misconceptions of Islam, particularly in the west, by simply be down to a miscommunication between the two civilizations. However, when the two sides discusses these perceived differences through respectful and informed dialogue, they often find that they have more in common than they might have thought. One of many areas where this breakdown in understanding exists is the rituals surrounding Eid ul-Adha. On this day, millions of Muslims all over the world sacrifice...

Why Turkey Lifted Its Ban on the Islamic Headscarf...

Turkish women who want to wear the hijab – the traditional Islamic headscarf covering the head and hair, but not the face – to civil service jobs and government offices will be able to do so now that the Turkish government has relaxed its decades-long restriction on wearing the headscarf in state institutions. The new rules, which don’t apply to workers in the military or judiciary, come into effect immediately and were put into place to address concerns that the restrictions on hijab were discouraging women from conservative backgrounds from seeking government jobs or higher education. “A dark time eventually comes to an end,” Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a speech to the parliament. “Headscarf-wearing...
